TinType by Hipstamatic App Reviews

Good start but could use tweaking

I love Hipstamatic & Ive learned to love Oggl & so far Im enjoying this app too. It does save to my Camera Roll automatically but Id like to be able to save to Oggl as well as Instagram. The color seems a little more saturated than the Hipsta C-Type Plate but Im ok with that. The DOF adjustment is a nice touch & will be better when we can re-locate the focus. All in all, its fun & I know it will improve!

Narrow utility, few options

I absolutely love hipstamatics type films in the original app. As with most of their filters These are great "out of the box," but require exporting the photo to another app if you want to tweak properties like saturation. I had hoped this app would be an equally awesome filter out of the box, but with built in options to customize. It is not. The basic tintype effect is slightly inferior to the Hipstamatic Films and there are few parameters to play with. The most unique feature, the dodge and burn for eyes, only works when a face is very clearly in close close focus, and is thrown off by the lenses of glasses. Given the right kind of photo, a very specific kind of portrait, the app is ok, but it lacks both the automatic quality of the hipstapaks as well as lots of options. 2.5 stars. I am using it, but I look forward to an update!

Great idea slapped together at last minute

Not intuitive I want to throw out many photos I saved they are still in the app. I hope you guys will improve this app. Im curious why this was released so soon it really seems incomplete.

Doesnt save original photo!!

Yes, the interface makes it clear that youre editing the original photo, but theres no reason it shouldnt edit a copy, thus preserving the original-- like every other photo app out there. Disappointed.

Why cant we share to Oggl?

I love this app. I have every Synthet.... oops I mean Hipstamatic app. I love them all. I REALLY MISS the disposable app. I know a lot people didnt like it, but I LOVED it. Thats neither here or there. Now Im a little bummed.. Anyway, sharing these photos to Oggl would be great! Thank you

Thank you for that update

I was waiting for you to add that to an update ability to save as edit

Great photos, clunky workflow

I love the results with this app but it drives me crazy that I cant just SHOOT with it. It stops every step of the way to ask questions which require user input. I wish I could take multiple photos in a row without being stopped after each one and asked what I want to do next. This app prevents the photographer from really exploring a subject photographically because the interface is so obnoxious.

Wont take or import photos on iPhone 6 Plus

UPDATE: The issue below still has not been resolved with 1.1 update. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE: The below is still true even after the latest update. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After taking a Photo or importing from the camera roll the editing screen appears, black where the photo should be and just the loading/thinking spinner. Controls at the bottom can be revealed at first, but eventually become unresponsive. Photos will not load at all for me, EVER, in this app. Only the Delete button in the top-left actually works.

Neat app.

Fun for selfies and portraits, also produces interesting photographs. I still cant import old photos without the app crashing, but at least now it doesnt just edit the original pic. Recommended.

Better than

Title says it all.

Authentic!

The results might just be even better than a real tintype. #NoJoke $WellSpent

Opened, then deleted

Went to get photo from my iPad albums. App only sees "moments" album. I said never mind and deleted.

Love the update!

I love this app. I have NO problems loading old pictures as others are complaining of. My app does not crash. I have a lot of memory at the moment though. I have found in hipstamatic that if I dont have enough memory left, the app will crash. Maybe that is what others are experiencing? I did not like that you had to save over the original picture before, so thank you for changing that! Now, I will actually use the app more. I also love the new addition of the brownish hues. Keep up the good work, hipstamatic!

Love the updates and the new warm filter

One Trick Pony

I had high hopes for this app by Hipstamatic but disappointed. Produces tin type style pics. No ability to refine image at all. You have to like the way they process the image or not. Not impressed. Maybe they will offer more refinements/choices in the future. Why do we as consumers buy Apples apps with its policy of no refunds? Could it be were suckers being played like a crappy banjo?

Good app before the update

Now it wont take photos. I just get a spinning wheel. In fact, Hipstamatic is suddenly not working right either. It cant find FB anymore.

Lost photos on ingest

The app doesnt save your tin type photos internally, and the pics also arent recognized upon importing everything from Photos, where theyre stored. I have imported photos for years with iPhoto and never lost any images until today. All tin types are gone, as I simply said yes to clear my phone after the ingest. Im shocked at how not user-friendly this app is when the original Hipstamatic is so great. Very disappointed.

Love this app. Update works...

I love this app. I have Tintype in Hipstamatic and Oggl but I love having it within its own app and being able to pick the format. After the update, the app stopped working for me, even after downloading it again. I had the same problems as described by other users. However, restarting the phone fixed the issue and it now works beautifully again. Thanks!

Should be used as an example of how not to write an app

This comes from a Hipstamatic fan. I’ve only used maybe a hundred apps or so, but this is far and away the worst. It is unbelievably poorly thought-out, the most kludgy and difficult to use of them all. It might only be 99¢, but the aggravation that you are saddled with for that is an insult. Pros: A moderately fun adjustable filter that produces a sometimes pleasing result. Though one whose novelty will wear off quickly. Cons: - Every time you shoot, you are prompted to save or delete the image - and it is S L O W. So be prepared to spend lot of time between captures. If you save the image, it takes even more time. - When you save an image, you better mean it, because to delete it you have to leave the app, open your image library and delete it from there. - When you export the images into your computer (I’m using Aperture on a MacBook Pro), all that come over are regular, iPhone pictures! The whole Tintype vibe is MIA! So, it’s ONLY for sharing from your phone to a few social media sites. In other words, to get them onto your computer, you would have to email them to yourself, because a wired download gets rid of the tintype effect that you bought the thing for in the first place. - And guess what on the social media? Only Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram. Nowhere else. There are no preferences to overcome the above genuinely idiotic forced maneuvers. You can not, for example, select to save images as you take them and keep the camera free for another shot. What would be the big deal? You can always delete them later. Instead, you have to operate your device constantly in between shots. If you don’t mind molasses slow operation, constant dialogue boxes asking you over and over again to do stuff every time you snap a shot, and the inability to export the images, this app might be for you. This is a horrible app. The developers should be fired for incompetence. They must have wanted to recreate not only the look of a tintype, but the cumbersome feeling of having to drag a darkroom around in a horse cart and the feeling of having to assemble a wooden camera and insert a plate for each and every shot. Unusable. This is the only one-star review I’ve ever written.

Doesnt work for me...wont take or ingest photos.

Im anHipstamaric fan, but this app stinks. It worked the first two times I used it, but not since. Just get black spinning processing screen...no photo. This is both when I take a photo and try to ingest a photo.
